Case Study 5: Existing car park lighting compliance check to AS 1158, AS 4282
Whats the compliance requirement?
AS 1158, AS 4282 are the main standards for compliance checking the light levels for public car parks in Australia, the new designs must comply with these two standards as a minimum, the old standards require you to follow a set value for areas such as average horizontal lux levels, but the new standard makes it even harder by making sure the levels compared against the nearby car parking element and making sure the minimum is above than the average of the abutting car parking element.
This compliance also requires the check for lux in two directions in a vertical fashion at 1.5 meter height, and ux measurement has a specific rule to follow as per AS 1158.
AS 4282 complaince make sure the light pollution does not affect the residential customers near to the lighting installation. This is a part of the council occupancy or development application process in majority of the councils in Australia. We can get you a compliant lighting design and compliance to AS 4282 check completed.
Who faces this dillema?
Most of the times its the council or property owners or electrical contractors who build a new car park in a public space. Usually if you go to an electrician they will throw you down the path of like for like replacement of light fittings and no compliance checks. This is where an registered electrical engineer can help you.
Is this tied to insurance claims?
The standard basically assume a certain level of fear of crime, public activity on deciding how much lights required and therefor provides much less chances for crime compared to a non compliance car parking spaces.
Can we use the existing poles and upgrade to an LED?
Yes, conditionally you can but as soon as a registered electrical engineer who know inside and out of the standards assess the situation at least a desktop assessment this cannot be confirmed. Pole reuse is suject to the structural engineers check if the proper documents are available. There are clamps available for light fittings on to the existing poles, we can provide solutions to suit this situation.
Benefits in hiring us
We are not tied to any light manufacturers or companies so you get an unbiased Australian Standard compliant design this includes an electrical design documents included with the lighting design packages. You dont have to hire another person to certify the electrical documents for the design we will certify it and ensure the installation is free of issues and addressed in proper time frames.
